Earth (Elemental, #1)Earth by Shauna Granger
ebook
Published May 1st 2011 by Shauna Granger
My rating: ♥♥♥

Shayna and her two best friends have the abilities to manipulate and control the four elements, earth, air, water and fire. While learning to hone their growing powers, they discover a new and malicious presence in their sleepy beach town. Someone is performing blood magic and threatens to expose their small magical community. So far only small animals have been slaughtered, but then the nightmares start.
Shayna suffers nightmares of being chased and sacrificed only to wake up bloodied and bruised. She thinks her magical blood is the ultimate target for the final blood rite. When an innocent girl, Tracy, is kidnapped Shayna knows it's only a ploy to draw her out; she can't let someone die because of her.

This is a book about naturally inherited powerful teenage witches. The truly original and interesting part of the story is the background on how each character were born into their powers and the alias they conjured to address each other. Shayna is an earth elemental, was born during an earthquake, and goes by Mother or Terra. Steven is a fire elemental, was born in a house fire, and would like to be called Pyro, but is referred to as Drake. Jodi is an air elemental, was born during a tornado, and is called Fae. The three practices circles, shops at a new age shop and could be considered witches. When sacrificial dark witchcraft circles appear in their neighborhood, they take it upon themselves to investigate. Little do they know this will bring them closer to the danger that coincidentally may be seeking them. The conflicts between the three best friends are interesting and sure to implode in future editions to the series. While the elementals come from familiar lines of power, they aren’t as communicably open with parents on their quest. The romance was down played which sort of disappointed me. I’m a sucker for love and fairy tale endings. This novel hints on issues of physically, sexually, and emotionally abusive relationships. I enjoyed the threesome’s mission to save a classmate from her destructive relationship, even in the mist of saving the world. The ending was bittersweet with loose ending s sure to take the next book on another whirlwind adventure.
