The Space Between by Brenna Yovanoff

The Space BetweenThe Space Between by Brenna Yovanoff

My rating: ♥ ♥ ♥

Everything is made of steel, even the flowers. How can you love anything in a place like this?

Daphne is the half-demon, half-fallen angel daughter of Lucifer and Lilith. Life for her is an endless expanse of time, until her brother Obie is kidnapped - and Daphne realizes she may be partially responsible. Determined to find him, Daphne travels from her home in Pandemonium to the vast streets of Earth, where everything is colder and more terrifying. With the help of the human boy she believes was the last person to see her brother alive, Daphne glimpses into his dreams, discovering clues to Obie's whereabouts. As she delves deeper into her demonic powers, she must navigate the jealousies and alliances of the violent archangels who stand in her way. But she also discovers, unexpectedly, what it means to love and be human in a world where human is the hardest thing to be.

This second novel by rising star Brenna Yovanoff is a story of identity, discovery, and a troubled love between two people struggling to find their place both in our world and theirs.

***SORRY FOR THE SPOILERS, BUT I GOT TO BE REAL***

Daphne is the daughter of Lilith (Biblical Adam’s first wife) and Lucifer (yep, the devil). When her beloved brother Obie (Son of Adam and Lilith) goes missing on Earth, she leaves Hell for the first time in her life to find him. On Earth, Obie’s mission was saving “lost souls” (hybrids half human and half angel). Daphne get help from Truman (Obie’s last case) to find him. But getting help from a “lost soul” didn’t make the search easy and there are obstacles and dangers along the way.

I didn’t love it. I didn’t hate it. Brownie points for the beautiful cover. The cover art and the title is what drew me in. I liked the alternating point of views. Usually when I read a book with a romance factor, I imagine myself as the leading lady. However with this leading man, the prospect wasn’t appealing-AT ALL!

Every time the author described Truman (which was a lot), I sat the book down. It should not have taken me this long to read this. Truman was unbearable. He was suicidal, alcoholic, depressed, scared up from cutting himself, paranoid with insomnia, and with an eating disorder. My experience went a little something like this:

*Reading book*
He’s thinner than I remember, shoulder blades showing through his worn-out sweater like wings.-pg 96

*putting book down*

*reading book*

The skin around his eyes look purple, like all the blood has drained out of the rest of him and settled beneath his eyelids in dark, poisonous bruises.-pg 96

*Putting book down*

*Reading book*

The mirrors are empty except for his own reflection. One too-thin boy with hallow eyes and lank, shaggy hair.-pg224

*Putting book down*

How was he even the love interest? I know beauty’s only skin deep…..yada yada. It’s what’s on the inside that counts. Well on the inside Truman was dead. Misery at its finest.

This highlight sums it up nicely: “It didn’t get better, it just got different- pg 180.

Daphne’s powers were an eye opener and really rekindled my interest!!! But sadly, that wasn’t the objective of the author: Romance #1....Action #2

The love story factor was ummm sweet, if you like train wreak men and have the whole nurturing instinct.

If I block out the mental pictures, there were some really sweet parts like : "He slides his hand into mine. He says nothing and doesn't need to. His hand is everything. I lean against him, resting my head on his arm."

Overall the story was definitely unique and creepy.
