Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor

Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1)Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

My rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages--not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers--beautiful, haunted Akiva--fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

*Holding a scuppies bead between my thumb and forefinger, wishing for an epic book............*

And then there was Daughter of Smoke and Bone!

"One upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well." Thus began my journey into Karou's world.

This book was like an origami love letter-intricate, complex, and infused with warmth.

Unbeknownst to me, like Karou, I too am like the analogy of the cat:

"...a cat that was always twining around ankles, meowing pet me, pet me, look at me, love me. Better to be the cat gazing coolly down from a high wall, its expression inscrutable. The cat that shunned petting, that needed on one. Why couldn't she [nor I] be that cat? Be that cat!!!"

Trying to describe this book is like trying to describe Star Wars-too much awesomeness for words. So I leave you with a constellation of excerpts and phrases:
♥ half animal people warring in a parallel universe

♥ a tragic romance

♥ buying teeth on the black market and from murderers

♥ scuppy, shing, lucknow, gavriel, and bruxis (oh my)

♥ "but that was a truth she told with a certain wry smile, as if she was being absurd. Over the years she'd found that that was all it took, that lazy smile, and she could tell the truth without risk of being believed................and so it became part of who she was Karou with her wry smile and crazy imagination."

If this snagged your curiosity, then READ THIS BOOK!
